OpenAI has announced that it will contribute a total of $5 million to support independent research regarding the impact of generative AI on the lives and development of youth aged 13 to 17.

This program aims to clarify the complex effects that arise as generative AI is integrated into the ways young people learn, create, and seek advice. Research themes include the correlation between AI usage patterns and developmental outcomes, the potential impact of AI use on daily life, the effect of safety and design choices on security, and variations in impact based on age, culture, and socioeconomic background.

The grants will be managed and operated by OpenAI Group PBC, with up to $1 million allocated per project. Eligible applicants include research institutions and organizations; for-profit initiatives will not be prioritized. The application deadline is 2026-10-06, and selected projects are expected to be notified by 2026-11-13.
