OpenAI announced on April 1, 2026, that it has completed a funding round at a record-high post-money valuation of $852 billion. In this round, the company secured total commitments of $122 billion, an increase from the $110 billion announced in February. SoftBank served as a co-lead investor, with participation from Andreessen Horowitz and D. E. Shaw Ventures.
The company has expanded rapidly since the public release of ChatGPT in 2022. As of March 2026, weekly active users have exceeded 900 million, with more than 50 million of those utilizing paid subscriptions. In a statement, OpenAI said that AI is driving productivity gains and accelerating scientific discovery. The company stated that this funding provides the resources necessary to maintain leadership at the scale required by the current moment.
CEO Sam Altman faces pressure to justify the massive valuation while looking toward a future IPO. In recent months, the company has scaled back certain features and products, such as Sora, to reduce costs. As of April 1, 2026, the company has recorded monthly revenue of $2 billion. While annual revenue for the previous year was $13.1 billion, cash burn continues, and the company has not yet reached profitability.
At the time of the February announcement, agreements had been reached for investments of up to $50 billion from Amazon, and $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank. The additional $12 billion in this round was raised from a broader base, including the first participation via banking channels and $3 billion from individual investors. Long-term partner Microsoft also participated, though the specific investment amount was not disclosed. OpenAI explained that this capital will be used to build the infrastructure layer of intelligence, which will return value to the economy and individuals over the long term.
