OpenAI announced that it has launched a multifaceted support initiative providing tools, training, and partnerships for students, educators, journalists, and news organizations. This effort aims to cultivate the next generation of reporters.
As a specific measure for the 2026–2027 academic year, OpenAI will collaborate with the Newmark J-School at the City University of New York (CUNY) and the Medill School at Northwestern University. OpenAI stated that it will provide more than 400 ChatGPT Edu subscriptions to graduate students and faculty at both institutions. ChatGPT Edu is an educational plan featuring enterprise-level privacy controls, ensuring that data is not used for model training.
This partnership aims to help students acquire the skills to use AI ethically and responsibly as AI transforms the nature of journalism. OpenAI has previously provided ongoing support to the news industry through grants to New York University (NYU) and training conducted via various journalist organizations.
