OpenAI has announced that Paul Christiano has been appointed to the board of the OpenAI Foundation. Christiano will also participate in the board of OpenAI Group PBC (OpenAI's for-profit entity) as a non-voting observer.

Christiano will join the Foundation's Safety and Security Committee (SSC). This committee is responsible for the governance of safety and security practices across all OpenAI organizations, including OpenAI Group PBC. Christiano serves as a senior technical advisor at the AI Safety and Innovation Center (CAISI) within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he has experience in evaluating frontier AI models related to national security and working on safety risk mitigation measures.

Furthermore, Christiano is the founder of the Alignment Research Center (ARC), a non-profit research organization aimed at aligning advanced AI systems with human interests. From 2017 to 2021, he led alignment research at OpenAI, contributing to foundational research in Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). It was noted that in his role as a senior technical advisor, he will be recused from any evaluations of models and matters related to OpenAI.
