The Verge reported that the Seattle Times and Newsday have filed copyright infringement lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging that the companies used their news articles as training data for AI models without permission and reproduced portions of their reporting in responses to user queries.

Both publishers included Microsoft as a defendant because Microsoft's Copilot is based on OpenAI's technology. The media outlets claim that the chatbots reduce the need for users to visit their websites or subscribe, thereby damaging subscription revenue. In the complaint, they are seeking not only the removal of copies of their copyrighted works but also the destruction of the training datasets and AI models that incorporated those works.
