OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the potential failure to fulfill the company's data center investment contracts in a post on X. "If we fail and cannot fix it, we should fail, and other companies will continue to provide services to customers," he said, adding that "the market, not the government, will handle it."
OpenAI has committed to data center investments with Oracle, Nvidia, Microsoft, AMD, Broadcom, and Amazon. The total amount is reported as $1.4 trillion in one source and $1 trillion in another. The annual revenue forecast for 2025 is approximately $20 billion, and the company completed a $40 billion funding round in March of the same year at a valuation of $260 billion. According to Tomasz Tunguz of Theory Ventures, fulfilling these contracts would require revenue to expand to $577 billion by 2029, representing growth of approximately 2,900% compared to current projections.
CFO Sarah Friar suggested at an event that the government might serve as a "backstop" for the contracts, but she later retracted the statement.
