According to a report by The Information, OpenAI has acquired Mac minis and Mac Studios in such vast quantities that it has effectively cleared out available inventory, while Anthropic is reportedly renting large numbers of Mac minis via Amazon's cloud services.

These machines are installed in server racks without peripherals such as displays and are being used to train AI agents. Specifically, they are employed for tasks such as autonomous computer operation, email organization, and code testing.

Apple Silicon's design characteristics are being leveraged for these purposes. Because Apple Silicon features a unified memory architecture where the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine share a single memory pool, it can be more efficient than Nvidia GPU configurations—which require data transfer between video memory and system memory—during reinforcement learning processes that repeat countless short inference.

Furthermore, both companies are said to be running massive models by clustering Macs to aggregate their memory.
