Apple's upcoming smart home camera to focus on AI analysis instead of video recording

Apple is reportedly developing a new smart home camera that takes a different approach than products from Ring or Google Nest. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device will not feature video recording for users to watch back.

Instead of providing a recorded video feed, the device is expected to use AI to analyze its surroundings and report detected activity. The camera is reportedly known internally as J450 and is expected to utilize a low-frame-rate camera alongside infrared sensors and facial recognition to identify people and pets.

This approach could allow Apple's Home system to drive automations, such as switching off lights when a room is empty or adjusting settings based on which household member is present. While this may enhance privacy, it distinguishes the product from Apple's existing HomeKit Secure Video system, which focuses on storing encrypted recordings in iCloud.

The device is not expected to arrive alongside Apple's upcoming HomePad launch, with previous reports suggesting Apple's broader push into home security may occur around 2027.
