On October 1, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced "Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR)," a new AI upscaling technology for PlayStation 5 (PS5). This will make AI-driven image enhancement features, which were previously limited to the high-end "PS5 Pro," available on the standard PS5 as well.

Upscaling is a technology that increases the resolution of a game screen rendered at a lower resolution. By allowing high-definition visuals while reducing rendering load, it is used to balance frame rates and image quality. Previously, SIE has provided "PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR)," which analyzes images pixel by pixel to enhance detail and stability, for the PS5 Pro.

QSSR is a lightweight version of PSSR, born from "Project Amethyst," a collaborative project with AMD. SIE states that it achieved operation on the PS5 by simplifying the neural network architecture and combining it with tuning to maximize the performance of the PS5.

The first titles to support this technology include Marvel's Wolverine by Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yōtei by Sucker Punch Productions. Patches for both titles were released on October 1, allowing users to select QSSR as an additional graphics option on the PS5.

SIE plans to provide QSSR widely to all PlayStation developers in the future.
