OpenAI has announced that an unreleased AI model of its own has solved the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the most challenging problems in mathematics. According to the company, approximately 10,000 AI agents collaborated to tackle the problem, presenting a solution on September 5, roughly 88 hours after the project began. The computational cost is estimated to have reached several million dollars.

The Navier-Stokes equations describe the motion of substances such as air and water and are widely applied in aircraft design and weather forecasting. Mark Chen, OpenAI's Director of Research, called this a "significant milestone in AI research."

To be recognized as a solution to the Millennium Prize Problems defined by the Clay Mathematics Institute, the result must be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and accepted by the mathematical community for at least two years. OpenAI has indicated that it does not intend to accept the prize money even if the discovery is confirmed.
